The monastery is a stavropegeal institution,directly under the Ecumenical Patriarch.It is located on the Western slope of Mount Olympos,near the village of Sparmos.Tt dates back to at least the 14th century,and has its own museum.The katholikon,or monastery church,is in the center of the complex.There are also chapels outside the property.In the second decade of the 20th century,the monastery was abandoned for about 80 years,until,in 2000,Metropolitan Vaseilios of Elassona initiated reconstruction and new monks moved in.
