Primate of Church of Cyprus Enters Repose at his Official Residence

On 7 November 2022,His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus departed this life at 6:40 am local time from his official residence at the Archbshopric headquarters,having struggled with cancer since 2018.He had received treatment in Florida at least twice.The Archbishopric's flags were accordingly lowered to half mast.He was 81.Born in Paphos,Cyprus as Herodotos Demetriou,he attended primary school there until,at the age of 12,he entered the novitiate at Saint Neophytos Holy Monastery in Paphos,where he graduated from high school in 1963.He was ordained to the diaconate the same year.In 1968,he began theological studies at the University of Athens,graduating in 1972 and being elected igoumenos (abbot) of St.Neophytos Monastery the same year.In 1978,he was elected Bishop of Paphos.* When the primate of All Cyprus,Archbishop Chrysostomos I,developed dementia and had to resign,the future Chrysostomos II served as locum tenens until he himself was elected to the primatial see on 5 November 2006.He was enthroned on 12 November at St.Nicholas Cathedral in Nicosia. During his reign,Chrysostomos II reinstated several ancient bishoprics,thus ensuring that the Holy Synod of Cyprus would have enough hierarchs to elect a new primate on its own.He also increased the participation of the laity in the election of a new primate.His passing was lamented by the World Council of Churches,which recalled his readiness to host ecumenical dialogues in Cyprus and receive the participants. In 2020,Archbishop Chrysostomos recognised the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine,and this recognition was ratified by a majority vote of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus.He felt that,as a matter of loyalty to the Ecumenical Patriarchate,this was a necessity. In 2022,he condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine as being senseless and unchristian.His funeral will take place on Saturday 12 November at 12 pm local time at the Cathedral Church of Apostle Barnabas,with interment to follow in the crypt.His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew held a trisagion memorial service for the Archbishop at the Phanar in Istanbul and plans to attend the funeral.The Holy Synod of Cyprus will meet on the following Monday to begin the election process.* President Nicos Anastasiades of Cyprus expressed sorrow for the Archbishop's passing.May his memory be eternal.*

His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East arrived in Cyprus to visit his close friend,His Beatitude Archbshop Chrysostomos II of New Justianiana and All Cyprus,who is ailing.He was accompanied by the Cypriot Health Minister,Mr.Michelis Hadjipantelas.Archbishop Chrysostomos was described as being strong yet saying little,and glad to see Patriarch John.He has had cancer for several years.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Concelebrate with Archbishop of Cyprus

On 8 March 2020,His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will concelebrate the Divine Liturgy for the first Sunday of Lent,the Sunday of Orthodoxy,with His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus at the Patriarchal Church of St.George in the Phanar,the Patriarchal compound in Constantinople.It will be the first time they have concelebrated since the Ecumenical Patriarchate bestowed autocephaly on the Orthodox Church of Ukraine,and,indeed,the first time Archbishop Chrysostomos has met with Patriarch Bartholomew at all since that proclamation.*
Patriarch Bartholomew will also celebrate Great Vespers on 7 March at the Church of St.George.*
Analysis:The visit of Archbishop Chrysostomos and his concelebration with Patriarch Bartholomew shows that the Church of Cyprus is intent on maintaining its close ties with the Ecumenical Patriarchate,unlike the Patriarchate of Moscow.*
Archbishop Chrysostomos recently had liver cancer surgery in the US state of Florida.*

Metropolitan Emmanuel of France Visits Cyprus for St.Barnabas Day

On 11 June 2019,the Feast of the Holy Apostle Barnabas,founder of the Church of Cyprus,was observed with a Divine Liturgy at the Church of St.Barnabas in Dasoupolis,Nicosia,Cyprus,concelebrated by His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus and several other hierarchs,including:
His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel of France (Ecumenical Patriarchate);
His Eminence Metropolitan Isaias of Tomassos and Oreini (Church of Cyprus);
His Grace Bishop Nikodimos of Nitria (Patriarchate of Alexandria);
and several other clerics.*
At the liturgy's conclusion,Metropolitan Emmanuel read a congratulatory message from His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew of Constantinople.In response,Archbishop Chrysostomos warmly expressed his gratitude for the message and Metropolitan Emmanuel's visit,and his love for Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy and Great Church of Christ at Constantinople,which,Archbishop Chrysostomos noted,has repeatedly supported the Church of Cyprus.

Lefkosia:Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus Marks Major Anniversary

His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus is celebrating the fortieth anniversary of his consecration to the episcopacy on 25 February 1978,as Metropolitan of Paphos,this weekend in Lefkosia,Cyprus.Attending the events are two Orthodox Patriarchs:His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa,and His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East.His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain and His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Vrioulon,Greece are carrying the good wishes of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to Archbishop Chrysostomos,and representatives of the other autocephalous Orthodox Churches are also expected at the observances.
The principal event will be the festal and hierarchal Divine Liturgy on Sunday 25 February,the Sunday of Orthodoxy,which is the first Sunday of Great Lent,commemorating the final restoration of the holy icons by St.Theodora the Empress in the ninth century.The service will be held at the Church of the God of Wisdom in Lefkosia,Cyprus.On Sunday afternoon,a ceremony and reception in honour of Archbishop Chrysostomos will be held at the church.*
A native of Paphos,Cyprus,Archbishop Chrysostomos was born on 10 April 1941.Admitted to the novitiate at the Holy Monastery of St.Neophytos,he attended the Paphos gymnasium (high school),graduating in 1963.On 3 November 1963,he was ordained to the diaconate.Having matriculated in the University of Athens in 1968,he graduated in 1972 and,on 19 October of that year,was elected Igoumenos (abbot) of HM St.Neophytos.On 5 November 2006,he was elected Archbishop of Cyprus and enthroned on 12 November.*
The very ancient Church of Cyprus was established by the Apostle Barnabas.Its autocephaly was affirmed by Canon 8 of the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431:
Therefore the Rulers of the holy churches in Cyprus shall enjoy,without dispute or injury,according to the canons of the blessed Fathers and ancient custom,the right of performing for themselves the ordination of their excellent Bishops.

Patriarch Irenej of Serbia Visits Cyprus

On the evening of 9 November 2016,His Holiness Patriarch Irenej of Serbia arrived at Larnaka,Cyprus on a weeklong irenic visit to the Mediterranean nation.He and his entourage were greeted at the airport by His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus,as well as members of the Cypriot Holy Synod.
Accompanying Patriarch Irenej are His Eminence Metropolitan Dr.Porfirije of Zagreb-Llubjana;His Grace Bishop Irenej of Backa;His Grace Bishop Justin of Zica;Archpriest Yejan Jovanovic;Hierodeacon Ermolaj;and Protodeacon Igor Davidovic.*
Numerous hierarchs,clergy and faithful attended a solemn doxology service for the distinguished guests in the Church of St.John the Theologian.Afterwards,the two Primates of autocephalous Orthodox Churches held talks in the Archdiocese of Cyprus' Synodal chambers.Both Primates had participated in the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church last summer in Crete.
