Bulgarian Hierarch Concelebrates With Metropolitan Emmanuel
On 26 December 2021,His Eminence Metropolitan Kiprian of Stara Zagora (Patriarchate of Bulgaria) concelebrated the Divine Liturgy of the Sunday After Christmas with His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and His Grace Bishop Adrianos of Halikarnassos (Ecumenical Patriarchate),who oversees the District of Phanar-Keratios Gulf,at the Church of St.Stephen in Balat,Istanbul. Also serving was the Very Reverend Archimandrite Charalambos Nichev, pastor of the Bulgarian Community in Constantinople.*
The liturgy was attended by several dignataries, including the Consul General of Bulgaria in Istanbul,His Excellency Vassil P. Valchev;President of the Bulgarian Community,Mr.Vasil Liaze;as well as pilgrims from Bulgaria and members of the Bulgarian language Community in Constantinople.Consul General Valchev read a message from the President of Bulgaria,His Excellency Rumen Radev.*
Analysis:Possibly the Bulgarian concelebration will irritate the Patriarchate of Moscow, which has severed communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate over the granting of autocephaly (independence) to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine on 5 January 2019.*

Marian Devotion Held in Smyrna
On the evening of 16 April 2021, the Akathistos hymn to the Theotokos was chanted at the Church of St.Photini in Smyrna (Izmir, Turkey). Presiding was His Eminence Metropolitan Bartholomew of Smyrna. The hymn was served before the icon Panagia Rodon to Amaranton, Our Lady of the Unwilted Rose.In the antique icon, the crowned Theotokos is cradling the Christ child, who is also crowned, in her left arm, and a staff decorated with roses in her right arm.*
The Church of St.Photini is small and plain, with no frescoes or mosaics on its white walls;there are several icons that hang on the walls, however, and a rudimentary iconostasis. The church was originally a Dutch chapel that was donated to the Orthodox community of Smyrna following the catastrophic fire of 1922.*
Assisting Metropolitan Bartholomew were two priests and two deacons.About 10 faithful attended to honour the Mother of God in the terrible crisis circumstances of the global pandemic.
The next day, His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the same church.*

Metropolitan Emmanuel Promoted
On 20 March 2021 was enthroned Elder Metropolitan of Chalcedon His Eminence Emmanuel (Adamakis),63,at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Istanbul,Turkey. So he is now the second most senior leader in the Ecumenical Patriarchate. For 17 years prior to his election to his new position by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate, he was Metropolitan of France. In that role,he was instrumental in effecting the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, among other achievements.
Metropolitan Emmanuel thus becomes a prime candidate to succeed His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew,80,who was himself Metropolitan of Chalcedon.*
Born in Crete, Metropolitan Emmanuel studied at the Sorbonne in Paris; the Catholic Institute Faculty of Philosophy; and the St.Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute. He went on to earn a Master's degree at the Holy Cross Institute of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts.*
In 1995, Metropolitan Emmanuel became director of the Office of the Orthodox Church at the European Union in Brussels. On 11 November 1996,he was consecrated auxiliary bishop of the Metropolis of Belgium.Well known in theological circles,he has represented the Orthodox Church in its dialogue with Oriental Orthodoxy,Judaism and Islam. At present,he is co-moderator for Religions for Peace International.*
His Eminence asks for the prayers of us all,so that he may be shown to be worthy of the expectations of Patriarch Bartholomew, and well-pleasing to both God and man.May the Lord bless and keep him always.Amen.*
The Church of the Holy Trinity is near Taksim Square and is the largest Greek Orthodox church in the city.It still has about 150 Greek parishioners. The domed single-naved basilica was completed in 1880 in Neo-Baroque and Neo-Byzantine style. The church also has a Greek school, still functioning on its property, and a courtyard with social services buildings and a sacred spring.*

President-elect Biden Writes to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
In recent days US President-elect Joe Biden has written to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, spiritual leader of the world's Eastern Orthodox Christians.Mr.Biden was responding to the Patriarch's letter of congratulations to him in early November, soon after he was declared victor by several news organisations.Patriarch Bartholomew had fondly recalled their meeting in Constantinople while Mr.Biden was Vice President during the Obama presidency. Here is the text of the President-elect's letter:
Your Holiness,
Thank you for your kind words and wishes.I'm sorry because we have not yet had the opportunity to contact you by phone.
It is a great honor to be elected the next President of the United States, and I realize just how much work lies ahead of us.Vice President-elect Harris and I will take office at a time of great global challenges-from the coronavirus to climate change-that transcend borders and require international cooperation. We look forward to working with you at this difficult time.
Thank you again, Your Holiness.I look forward to a future dialogue.
Sincerely,
Joe
P.S. (handwritten) Be well.We need your leadership.*
Patriarch Bartholomew plans to visit the US in the autumn of 2021.*
