Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Begins Major Visit to Italy
On 15 September 2019, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew departs from Athens, where he attended a baptism, for Rome and the start of a five-day visit. On 16 September, he will deliver the keynote address at the 24th International Congress of the Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.Patriarch Bartholomew will speak on the theme "Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches 50 years later and the Ecumenical Movement". Following his address, he will attend Vespers and a reception in his honour by the Holy Metropolis of Italy and Malta.
The Society says its organisational centre is the Department for Legal Philosophy,Law of Religion and Culture (former Institute for Canon Law) of the Viennese Faculty of Law.Its purpose is the promotion of better international and inter-confessional scholarly collaboration among specialists of the Law of the Eastern Churches and of the Civil Law on Churches insofar as it concerns the Eastern Churches. His All-Holiness is a founding member of the Society.*
On 17 September, Patriarch Bartholomew will meet with His Holiness Pope Francis in the Vatican. From 18-20 September, Patriarch Bartholomew will conduct an official visit to Calabria, Sicily on the occasion of the Centenary of the establishment of the Italo-Albanese Eparchy of Lungro, which is a Byzantine Rite diocese of the Catholic Church. The Eparchy was created in 1919 for emigrants from Albania and Epirus.
According to the Eparchy:
In a few days Calabria will witness an historic event of grace. On Wednesday 18 will land at Lemezia Terme Airport His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople. He will arrive in Calabria after having met with Pope Francis, with whom he is working intensely in steps of rapprochement between the Catholic and Orthodox brothers, so that may resound as soon as possible in the universe,in a unified way, the glory that is appropriate to God.*
The Most Reverend Donato Oliverio is the Bishop of Lungro.*

Patriarch Kirill Meets with Italian President,Seeks Catholic-Orthodox Push for European Cohesion
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with the President of Italy,Sergio Mattarella, who was visiting Moscow,on 12 April.During the talks at the Danilov Monastery, headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church, the spiritual leader of more than 100 million souls in Russia,Ukraine,Belarus and the diaspora, remarked that:
The Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church can and should do everything to make the world a more peaceful place;to decrease the level of confrontation between East and West so that we again feel ourselves belonging to one cultural environment, which we call Europe.
I think our shared convictions-Pope Francis' and mine-are that today the religious factor should contribute to reconciliation of people in the European continent and spiritual union among them.*
In the joint declaration signed by Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis following their historic first meeting of a Catholic and Russian Orthodox primate in Havana,Cuba on 12 February 2016,they summoned Catholics and Orthodox to work together fraternally in proclaiming the Good News of salvation and to give shared witness to the Spirit of truth in these difficult times:
We call upon Christians of Eastern and Western Europe to unite in their shared witness to Christ and the Gospel,so that Europe may preserve its soul, shaped by two thousand years of Christian tradition.

US,Jordan Prepare for Regional Crisis with Desert Drills
As part of the annual US Central Command-Jordanian Exercise Eager Lion,US and Jordanian Marines,as well as Italian soldiers, trained in the Jordanian desert last week.Jordan has been the most active Middle Eastern member of the anti-ISIL Operation Inherent Resolve.Last year, its pilots flew more missions against ISIL in Iraq and Syria than all the other Middle Eastern members combined,so it is evident why these bilateral military drills are so critical to both countries. They believe they must be able to respond effectively to a regional security crisis together.*
Every other year,Eager Lion is open to substantial multilateral participation. In 2015,19 countries participated;and even more are anticipated next year.*
On 18 May,the troops, who are Joint Tactical Air Controllers and Joint Forward Observers, assembled on a desert hilltop under the scenario of gathering data to provide to aircraft and artillery,so that 30,000 pounds of explosives could be dropped on an enemy column of armoured vehicles preparatory to an infantry assault.*
The US Marine JTACs from Kilo Company,Battalion Landing Team,3rd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment,24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, trained with their allies for two weeks to gain familiarity with each others' tactics and procedures. These Fire Support Teams,or FiSTs,mitigate the enemy advantages by directing fire from artillery, naval guns and aircraft. They shape the battlefield, destroying and neutralising targets so the ground unit can move, said 1st Lieutenant Bryan C. McDonald,Fire Support Officer with Kilo Company. He praised his Jordanian and Italian allies as being efficient.*
In this case, the fire support came from 2 US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers and AH-64 Apache helicopters, along with 2 sections of Royal Jordanian F-16s and AH-1 Cobras, besides mortars. The mortars were used first.
The FiST marks targets with ground-based lasers, infrared lasers or smoke rounds so aircraft can identify them easily.*
Exercise Eager Lion 2016 ran from 15-24 May.The scenarios simulated a coordinated, partnered military response to conventional and unconventional threats, including chemical, biological and nuclear.Six thousand troops-three thousand each from the US and Jordan-participated this year.Eager Lion is the largest exercise US Central Command participates in.
General Joseph L. Votel,US Army,is US CENTCOM Commander.Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, under the command of Lieutenant General Sean McFarland,US Army,is a subordinate command under US CENTCOM.*
The 24th MEU is currently embarked on ships of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which has been deployed to maintain regional security in the US 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility.

The CIA Versus ISIL
CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen says the Agency is working closely with the US military in Iraq and Syria to disrupt and degrade ISIL.Mr.Cohen was previously Deputy Director for Operations (clandestine service) at the CIA.*
John Brennan,Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, adds that ISIL today is a greater cause for alarm than al-Qaida was after 9-11.ISIL is a lot larger than al-Qaida was and goes into more places.*
Italy will allow US drones to be based at the US Naval Air Station in Sigonella,Sicily for protection of US Special Operations Forces serving on the ground in Libya and elsewhere in North Africa. No offensive operations by the drones will be permitted and Italian pre-approval of the strikes will be required.Italy says it is committed to playing its part in the anti-ISIL effort,Operation Inherent Resolve.
The programme was initiated in January.
While the CIA has recently been involved in identification and location of ISIL leaders in Syria for drone targeting, the Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command has actually been carrying out the strikes. It is not known whether the Agency is playing the same role in the North Africa programme.

Inside NATO's Massive Exercise Trident Juncture 2015
Over 36,000 NATO and Partner nation troops, and, for the first time ever in a NATO exercise, international and nongovernmental organisations, are participating in Exercise Trident Juncture 2015,the biggest NATO exercise since 2002.The innovative exercise includes the EU and African Union as participants, along with the ICRC and other organisations. It is NATO beginning to shift from over a decade of intense counterinsurgency in Afghanistan to the current security environment-although its work in Afghanistan continues as dictated by conditions on the ground.*
TRJE 2015 will use new and evolving concepts;advanced technology;cutting edge military capabilities and the world's most modern land, sea and air forces, including special operations,in the most complex and realistic scenarios. The main goal is to train, evaluate and certify the NATO Response Force,at the core of which is the new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force,VJTF.The fictitious but realistic setting is a country beyond NATO's borders that is a victim of international tensions, natural hazards and a neighbour's aggression. The events will range from the effects of subversion and terrorism to grand military manoeuvers on a large scale;from the conditions of chemical warfare to the battlegrounds of cyber and information;from the intricacies of tribal rivalries to the challenges of unpredictable and autocratic political leaders.*
TRJE 2015 will primarily be held in Spain,Portugal and Italy-a huge area to provide safety for the complex manoeuvers. The exercise is characterised by:
1.the size of the training area,which is huge to Europeans;
2.speed-speed on the land,sea or in the air;
3.multiple events happening simultaneously in the huge training area.
In the scenarios, airports are heavily fought for, both defending or taking them;the use of artillery,IEDs and propaganda are represented;four full brigades of marines will be coming in and out of several amphibious operations together, with air cover assisting;a fight for air superiority and a fight for freedom of navigation are enacted;the use of the Global Hawk UAV is tested. The exercise is divided into phases CPX,the Command Post Exercise for strategic and operational level staff training, evaluation and certification with the EU and AU;and LIVEX for Tactical level troops engagements throughout Italy,Portugal and Spain;the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea;plus Canada,Norway,Germany,Belgium and the Netherlands. At the conclusion of TRJE 2015,the headquarters staff from Joint Forces Command Brunssum will be officially certified to head the NATO Response Force,if activated, throughout 2016.Its core element, the VJTF,is required to respond with 5,000 troops in 48 hours to crises in the East and South of the Alliance.*
Those participating in TRJE 2015 are 27 of the 28 NATO Allies, plus Partners Australia;FYROM;Sweden;Finland;Austria;Bosnia-Hercegovina;and Ukraine. It runs from 28 September to 3 November.

Pinterest Looking To Grow User Base and Revenue
Photo curating and sharing platform Pinterest is hoping to expand its user base in Europe. The social media company is opening offices in the Netherlands,Spain,Italy and Sweden this year.
In another big move, the privately held firm is taking a big step in monetisation of the platform with the "buyable pins" concept. Now users will be able to buy depicted products directly from the site by clicking on small blue "Buy It" tabs on the pins,as the platform's photos are called.
We're very excited about products being brought directly into the Pinterest ecosystem, said Satish Kanwar of Shopify.Pinterest is our second largest referrer, but the first in value of purchases made.*
Pinterest users often use the site to shop for products or get ideas for projects, but to this point have had to go offsite to actually make a purchase. The company is five years old and valued at 11 billion dollars.Pinterest will not get a cut of each buyable pin transaction, but will offer vendors the option of paying for a promoted pin which is shown to users with a particular profile.Similarly,Google is adding a buy button to search results.
More than two million products will initially be offered on buyable pins by the likes of retailers such as Macy's,Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. You can pay with ApplePay or credit card.Buyable pins will launch on the Pinterest iOS app for US users this month, then be available on Android and desktop later this year.
Pinterest has strong appeal to those looking for new furniture and decorating ideas, fashion, wedding plans and baby products,as well as those interested in curating photos that reflect their interest in any number of topics, from art history to sports.
Successfully monetising this growing and distinctive platform will point it in the direction of becoming a public company.

What Investors Need Today
What you need is stable earners with big cash flow, advised Ashok Shah, investment director at London&Capital.Later,as QE approaches, you can take another look.*
I think the Russia/Ukraine situation is going to drag on for months to come.Until there is a definite economic impact,I think the market will look right through it.*
The bond market is saying the economic outlook, especially in Europe,is poor. We're already seeing Italy going back into recession in the second quarter. The underlying problem is deflationary pressures. That's going to restrain any recovery in the economic growth rate.I think we have to be used to very high levels of unemployment for long periods of time, until there is proper restructuring.I think the brain drain from the UK and Europe is going to continue for a long period of time,Mr.Shah predicted.*
The way we're going to quantify Russia and Iraq is,if you cut drilling in Iraq and Russia, you're going to cut drilling numbers for the oil service industry,CNBC host Jim Cramer noted.*
China is just not liking us at all with its antitrust policy.Look at Applied Materials. It's down 10-20% because of China.China's cracked down on Cisco.China's playing with us,dumping their steel.Who's spending in China? Amazon.Look out,PRC,Amazon's coming,Cramer warned.*

Prologis Industrial REIT Sees Good Signs
Prologis is the world's largest industrial real estate investment trust.CEO Hamid Moghadam cites FedEx,UPS,Amazon and Wal-Mart as being among the warehouse firm's largest customers. We think economic growth and the lack of construction is gonna give us pricing power,Mr.Moghadam said.Ecommerce is probably the biggest renter and housing the least, and those in the middle are also growing.
Housing affects our smaller buildings.Under 100,000 square feet,we have about 10% vacancy. That's finally happening this year.
Overseas,we're seeing really good demand on domestic consumption.Japan is doing well because it's changing from an export to a domestic import economy.Spain,Italy and the UK are going strong.France is the weakest.President Hollande's policies have frightened people, and there's a lot of flight capital.
If occupancies drop to the 90s or below as in 2009,I get worried. We're a conservative bunch and we'd like to see it higher,Mr.Moghadam admitted.
UBS is to increase its Asia corporate advisory head count by 10% on the region's growth forecast.
Germany's industrial output was up in February on economic recovery.
Alcoa's earnings topped estimates on growing demand for aircraft.

Asset Manager:Observations and Opportunities
It will reach a point where Spain needs the bailout package, said Mark Konyn,PhD,CEO of Cathay Conning Asset Management.Italy is not at all out of the woods yet.Overall, the whole process has been delay and delay and delay,to drag things out as long as possible.
With regard to the US fiscal cliff, everyone has some thing to lose in this.I think they will mediate a compromise that allows them to roll the whole thing over for twelve months hence. The cost of going over the cliff would be a massive setback globally, with a 4% GDP loss.
In Europe,Greece is not the main issue;Spain is.Investors are taking more risk in their bond portfolio. There are also opportunities within equities for taking on risk. They will continue into next year.
The catalyst for Chinese stocks is not there. In March, there will be some infrastructure spending in China. There will be some opportunities around that,Dr.Konyn pointed out.
Cathay Conning Asset Management is a provider of innovative asset management solutions to institutions and insurers in the Asia Pacific region, offering a differentiated suite of investment products and services.
Mark Konyn has a doctorate in Risk Analysis from London Metropolitan University and was a fellow at University College London. He is currently a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

Chief Market Strategists:Grappling With Greece-and who may ultimately win
Even if some problems are solved in Europe,we still have more to go,according to Nick Colas,Chief Market Strategist at ConvergEx Group.Germany is a special case,a high growth export economy, sending such things as machine tools to China.Spain is like Florida:housing driven, with homes for retirees.
Europe's got to firewall a bunch of the issues in Italy,Spain and Portugal. What they're really trying to do is buy time.We in the U.S. are doing everything to keep rates low on the monetary side;Europe has embraced austerity. We are trying to keep growth going. We shall see who wins.
Leadership is lacking, adds Andrew Economos,Head of Sovereign&Institutional Strategy,Asia ex-Japan at JP Morgan Asset Management.Greek politicians are setting themselves up for the April election.A deal is done. It's really a question of getting the three political parties in line.
We'll have this rolling crisis as we sweep through the periphery.Germany will guarantee the debt and China will take a stake.I think it means ample liquidity.Ultimately,it flows into Asian markets,Mr.Economos believes.
ConvergEx Group is a provider of mission-critical software and services to asset managers and financial intermediaries globally.Serving more than 4,000 institutional customers in 22 cities worldwide, their products and services span the investment life cycle.

Russell Investments:What Makes Sense Today
Europe is a huge source of unknowable risk,in the view of Russell Investments' Chief Market Strategist,Stephen Wood. The U.S. economy is doing a hair better than O.K.It is growing. When the market focuses on U.S. fundamentals,it tends to do well.
A globally diversified portfolio of risk assets makes sense. They outpace inflation and give you some return. If you look at the pullbacks as opportunities to get in,you've been able to nickel and dime your way in.The emerging markets are gonna be good in 3-5 or 5-7 years.
Corporations are much less likely to default than governments.Equities could end the year positive on the backs of earnings.
We have a market-based culture, with government institutions responsive to the market. It's more confrontational in Europe. You kind of grind it out here. We've got a number of years to work through these debt issues, whereas in Italy and Greece they've got a couple of days,in Dr.Wood's opinion.

Cruise Ship Vulnerability:Remembering The Achille Lauro
In October 1985,four Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Egypt, riveting the world's attention. They demanded that Israel release 50 Palestinian prisoners.
Among the liner's 400 passengers and crew was a disabled American,Leon Klinghoffer,69.The terrorists killed him and dumped his body and wheelchair overboard in one of the most brazen atrocities in the history of the Middle East.To this day,the event is recalled with considerable emotion.
After a two-day ordeal, the terrorists agreed to surrender to Egypt in exchange for safe passage. An Egyptian jet took off with the terrorists, but U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat fighters forced the escape plane to land in Sicily, where Italian troops arrested the hijackers.
In August 1997,the Palestine Liberation Organisation reached a settlement with the Klinghoffer family.
The Achille Lauro memory came back when the cruise liner Carnival Splendor became stranded off of a Mexico terrorized by drug gangs this week.

WTO Director Sees Progress
Pascal Lami,Director of the World Trade Organization, noted progress at the G8 summit in Italy last week:1.solid impetus, solid commitment to push back protectionist tendencies;2.commitment to finish the Doha round of negotiations;3.commitment to keep pushing on open trade, which is what developing nations need.As compared to last year, the U.S. and India have expressed the political will together. There remains a bit of compromising to be done, but their commitment to Doha 2010 is something new,Mr.Lami observed.
The G20 group of developed and key developing nations are to meet in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania in September. The G8 summit may be considered to have been preparation for what many believe to be the more significant meeting.

Ministers Agree on Framework
The G8 finance ministers, meeting in Lecce,Italy over the weekend, have produced the Lecce Framework,a strategy for obtaining a set of common principles and standards governing the conduct of international business and finance, according to their communique.Their goal is to identify and resolve regulatory problems that contributed to the financial crisis.U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the U.S. would propose more conservative standards, including several international proposals to help raise global standards of oversight of cross-border financial firms and global derivatives markets.
The G8 ministers, representing the U.S.,France,Italy,Germany,Russia,Canada,the U.K. and Japan, noted recent improvements in global financial markets and economic data, although significant risks remain. They asked the International Monetary Fund to help devise a plan for winding down fiscal and monetary interventions, while agreeing to maintain the programs as needed.
