Constantinople in Kyiv:Patriarchal Church Reopened

On 13 December 2020,Old Calendar St.Andrew's Day, the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv was reopened with a blessing by water by His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel of France, who was representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate along with Patriarchal Deacon Iakovos Krochak. The reopening of the gates service preceded an hierarchal Divine Liturgy concelebrated by hierarchs including His Eminence Archbishop Yevstratiy of Chernihiv and Nizhyn, representing His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine ,and His Grace Bishop Michael of Komana,Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Ukraine. Also attending were former President of Ukraine Petro Porishenko; Members of the Ukrainian Parliament;a representative of the Greek Embassy in Kyiv; and other officials.* The Church of St.Andrew was given to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Ukrainian state in 2018.Thus it is a stavropigial institution, directly under the Patriarch of Constantinople.Metropolitan Emmanuel noted that the stavropigion is: the true witness of the strong unity of the Church body, and it is by no means an open interference in the internal affairs and operation of each Church. That is, the stavropigion is a sign of spiritual coexistence.* The ornate baroque-style church has westernised iconography framed with gold on the red iconostasis.* Speaking on Ukrainian TV,Mr.Poroshenko said that two more Orthodox Churches are close to recognising the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. He knows this from his diplomatic channels. So far, four Orthodox Churches have recognised the OCU: Constantinople,Alexandria, Greece and Cyprus.*

Cyprus Holy Synod Recognises

At its meeting on 23 and 25 November, the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, following detailed discussion, recognised the autocephaly,or independence,of the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine, approving the initiative of His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus. The vote was 10-7, which is sufficient for approval under the charter of the Holy Synod. It should be remembered that the Church of Greece's recognition of the OCU wasn't unanimous, either, with a handful of hierarchs dissenting.* Archbishop Chrysostomos had commemorated His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine at a Divine Liturgy on 24 October 2020.The two Primates have since spoken by telephone and are planning to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy at a later date.Only a Primate commemorates the diptychs,or list of the Primates of the Local Churches,at the Divine Liturgy.*

Ukrainian Archimandrite to Become Bishop of Komana

On 8 November 2020, the feast of Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the other Bodiless Powers, the Very Reverend Archimandrite Michael (Anischenko) will be ordained Bishop of Komana, Asia Minor by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. He is currently serving as Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Ukraine and will continue in that role of overseeing the Patriarchate's stavropegial institutions in Ukraine, based at St.Andrew's Cathedral in Kyiv.* Bishop-elect Michael was formally informed of his election by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on 16 October in two ceremonies, one of them in the Patriarchal Church of St.George in the Phanar, the Patriarchal compound in Constantinople, where he gave his acceptance remarks.* Father Michael studied at the Volyn Theological Seminary of the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine and served in a parish of that jurisdiction in Lutsk. He continued his studies in Greece and served the Ecumenical Patriarchate parish in Antalya, Turkey. In January 2019,he was appointed Exarch to Ukraine.* The autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has again been in the news since His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus has recently recognised the autocephaly by commemorating His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine during the Divine Liturgy. This makes the Church of Cyprus the fourth Orthodox Church to recognise the OCU, after Constantinople, Greece and Alexandria. The news brought an angry response from the Moscow Patriarchate and a faction of four Cypriot hierarchs close to the Russian Orthodox Church. In response, some monks of Mt.Athos have defended the autocephaly by writing tracts, including monks from Xenophontos and Pantocratoros Holy Monasteries. Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Chrysostomos have also defended the autocephaly, noting it has long been the Ecumenical Patriarchate's prerogative to grant it and make other interventions as needed.*

Ecumenical Patriarchate Communiqué - Ecumenical Patriarchate - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

Analysis:Responding to issues raised by the COVID-19 crisis as reported by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate took firm action to right the ship in this unprecedented storm. They met in Valoukli, Constantinople at the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the Lifegiving Spring, because it affords more room for the necessary social distancing than the Patriarchal compound, the Phanar.Basically, our new Archbishop's leadership as exarch in America was supported by his brother bishops.

US,Greece to Counter Russian Influence Together

On 29 September 2020,US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Crete with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. There Mr.Pompeo announced the US Navy Expeditionary Sea Base ship USS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB 4) will be homeported at NSA Souda Bay.The ship is a logistics/Command and Control ship that enables military operations by troops including Special Operations Forces.Secretary Pompeo said that Souda Bay is the perfect choice, given its strategic location. In his remarks,Mr.Pompeo stated that: Our security cooperation today is especially important as Russia continues to destabilize the region, especially in Libya, where the US calls for the withdrawal of all foreign military forces, and support for de-escalation and Libyan reconciliation. The Prime Minister and I also agreed to explore closer cooperation to overcome challenges that Russia poses through malign influence activities such as the spread of misinformation on the pandemic and trying to co-opt the Orthodox Church.* Meanwhile,in a TV interview, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupolis, one of the New Lands of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Greece, observed that: There are political and geopolitical issues about which the Church has to make decisions, but they do not concern the Christians.Unfortunately,Christians, instead of praying and showing their love, tend to use such geopolitical, political, economic and diplomatic events in order to divide each other.* In particular, His Eminence referred to the Russian Orthodox Church: These tactics hurt us, the Greeks. The Russian Orthodox Church tried to "erase" the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In other words,it tried to overthrow the ecclesiastical order that has existed for 2,000 years and to take things in hand in relation to the universality of Orthodoxy. This is not an Orthodox Christian trait, and, therefore,we cannot be receiving political support and taking any geopolitical approach. If the sacred order that prevailed for so many years is overthrown, ultimately, all Orthodoxy will be overthrown, because all peoples will be demanding to take the lead.* Alexandroupolis Anthimos went on to comment on the recent formal request by President Stevo Pendarovski and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev of North Macedonia to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that the uncanonical Macedonian Orthodox Church be granted autocephaly: It remains to be seen in which direction God will steer things.Anyway, they are Orthodox Christians too.We are sensitive, but the situation must be handled with courtesy and evangelical gentility, not with cruelty, war, hatred and evil.*

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew about Hagia Sophia - Church of the Twelve Apostles, Ferikoy, Turkey - 30 June 2020

Church News:On 1 September 2020,His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and All Palestine are to visit Constantinople for the Ceremony of the Indiction, the Church new year, The National Herald reported. The ceremony features the signing of the official proclamation of the ecclesiastical new year, the Codica,by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Patriarchate hierarchs.
Although Patriarch Theophilos has not recognised the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine,he continues to commemorate Patriarch Bartholomew during the Divine Liturgy. This visit will be his first to the Phanar, the Patriarchal compound, since the Ecumenical Patriarchate granted autocephaly to the OCU.
In other Inter-Orthodox news, Patriarch Bartholomew called His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East, expressing his sorrow and offering his prayers and support for those affected by the Beirut explosion that killed more than 150, including Orthodox Christians, and damaged several Orthodox churches and an Orthodox hospital.
For his part, Patriarch John was deeply touched by Patriarch Bartholomew's support, and expressed his gratitude, asking the Ecumenical Patriarch to continue his prayers for the great crisis that the Church is currently facing, the Ecumenical Patriarchate said in a statement.Patriarch John has recently vigorously defended the Ecumenical Patriarchate when Turkey converted Agia Sofia into a mosque.

Patriarch of Antioch Defends Constantinople

In a letter characterised by sincere fraternity and solidarity in Christ,His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East has rushed to the side of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew over the recent decision by the Turkish Council of State and President Recep Tayip Erdogan concerning the ancient Hagia Sofia cathedral. His words, deeply touching at this time of manifold crises throughout the world, including the Christian East, will resound in the hearts of all the Orthodox:
Damascus, July 13,2020
Your All-Holiness and Brother,
It is with much regret that we received the news of the Turkish government's decision to convert the Church of Hagia Sofia to a mosque.
We are dismayed by this decision. We strongly denounce and condemn any act that could counterfeit the historical identity of our homeland.
The recent decision aims at marginalising the Christian presence in the East, not to say that it attempts to eradicate the remaining pioneering role and Christian presence in peaceful coexistence with the rest of the religious groups
... This decision comes to undermine all the efforts deployed by the countries of this East to build states of citizenship that respect religious diversity and promote the positive values of secularisation.Yet, here is a decision that opens the wounds and thus, alas, reinforces extremism and eliminating the other.
We stand by you, dear Brother, joining our prayers for your Holy Church and this wounded East.We support every effort of yours to enhance your presence in your own land, the land of your ancestors, the Church of Constantinople, the new Rome to which we are all bonded by brotherhood and unity of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.
Greeting your holiness with an embrace in Christ, we convey to you the solidarity of our faithful of the Church of Antioch and All the East, asking the Lord our Saviour to grant you many years of ministry in this holy parish, providing them with the wellsprings of salvation.*

Cyprus: Metropolitan Isaias Remembers Emperor Konstantinos

On 31 May 2020, His Eminence Metropolitan Isaias of Tomasos and Oreini led a memorial service for the last Byzantine Emperor,Konstantinos XI Palaiologos, who died defending the Queen of Cities, Constantinople, from the Ottoman Turks on 29 May 1453.The service was held before a replica of an iconic statue of the heroic Emperor in the Metropolis compound, which includes the new Russian Church of St. Andrew that serves the many Russian expatriates in Cyprus. His Eminence said that:
As long as a Greek heart beats, the memory of the City's fall will be reborn in our souls.*
The Byzantine Empire, over its thousand year history, became a beacon of culture and the humanities,as well as an exponent of the Eastern Orthodox faith. It achieved this through a juxtoposition of classical Greek culture,Roman law and Christianity. They referred to themselves as "the Romaioi", the Romans, because they lived in the Eastern half of the Roman Empire - the half that ultimately survived until 1453 and,in certain respects, even until our own era.
As His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America reflected on 29 May:
What matters most is that the legacy of the Christian Roman Empire is incarnate in the sacred person of the Ecumenical Patriarch and the continuing diakonia (service) of the Great Church that continues to this day.*

Patriarch of Alexandria:'Greece is Great'

From 23-24 April 2020, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa presided at ceremonies emphasising Hellenism at the Monastery Church of St.George in Old Cairo, Egypt.Following Great Vespers on 23 April, His Beatitude presided the Divine Liturgy the next day.Immediately afterwards,he bestowed the Cross of the Apostle St.Markos on Captain Angelos Kiousis of the Hellenic Coast Guard, who has served in Port Said, Egypt for two years.Patriarch Theodoros pointed out that His Eminence Metropolitan Niphon of Plousios, who was also present, and Captain Kiousis were the spiritual pillars of Port Said.
Patriarch Theodoros also stated that:
Greece is great in these days of dark fear, beyond the pandemic; beyond the suffering and passion, she is great among the choirs of the blessed.*
Then the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa proceeded to unveil the bust of the late Igoumenos (Abbot) of the Monastery, Agathangelos,on his fiftieth death anniversary.Father Agathangelos,a native of Thrace, Greece, had served in the Monastery for 45 years.*
Following the unveiling, Patriarch Theodoros rededicated the renovated Monastery cemetery Chapel of St.Katherine.The project was spearheaded by the current proistomenos of the Monastery, the Very Reverend Archimandrite Damaskinos.Patriarch Theodoros thanked Father Damaskinos:
You have served the Church by restoring the Chapel of St. Katherine, herself an Alexandrian.*
The Chapel was renovated in memory of Father Damaskinos' late mother.*

Church of Cyprus Wants to Publicly Celebrate Pascha in May

His Eminence Metropolitan Isaias of Tomasos and Oreini (Church of Cyprus) reassures the faithful that Pascha is neither postponed nor cancelled this year. The Church will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on 27 May, the Apodosis (Leave-taking) of Pascha, as it in fact always does-only this year more widely, he told Andreas Dmitropoulos on Sigma TV's "Protoselido" (Front Page) programme.*
Every year, Easter is liturgically recapitulated 39 days after the feast day,yet few take note.It is done with the same Divine service and completes the festive cycle and messages of the feast. One day before the feast of the Ascension, the Church recaps Pascha. For the last time,we can crack eggs as we complete the Resurrection cycle.
If the State wants,it can make the Apodosis a public holiday this year for the people.Should the restrictions still be in force in late May, the Apodosis will have to be observed behind closed doors, however, Metropolitan Isaias said.*
The Church of Greece is planning the same thing. So far,no word from the Ecumenical Patriarchate on plans to emphasise the Apodosis this year.*

Patriarch Bartholomew Heeds Pope's Call to Prayer

On 25 March 2020, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew heeded the call of His Holiness Pope Francis to recite the Our Father at noon. The Pope made the request of Christian leaders worldwide to join in common prayer for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic.*
Patriarch Bartholomew entered the Patriarchate Chapel of St.Andrew and lit a candle.Facing West before the iconostasis,he recited the Our Father in Greek with a handful of clerics who are on staff at the Fanar, the Patriarchal compound in Constantinople.*
This was followed by His All-Holiness' remarks in Italian. He had earlier presided the Divine Liturgy of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in the Patriarchal Church of St.George.*
The Chapel of St. Andrew is bright, featuring a golden, abbreviated iconostasis with two Western-style icons on either side the Royal Doors.*

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Concelebrate with Archbishop of Cyprus

On 8 March 2020,His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will concelebrate the Divine Liturgy for the first Sunday of Lent, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, with His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus at the Patriarchal Church of St.George in the Phanar, the Patriarchal compound in Constantinople. It will be the first time they have concelebrated since the Ecumenical Patriarchate bestowed autocephaly on the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and, indeed, the first time Archbishop Chrysostomos has met with Patriarch Bartholomew at all since that proclamation.*
Patriarch Bartholomew will also celebrate Great Vespers on 7 March at the Church of St.George.*
Analysis:The visit of Archbishop Chrysostomos and his concelebration with Patriarch Bartholomew shows that the Church of Cyprus is intent on maintaining its close ties with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, unlike the Patriarchate of Moscow.*
Archbishop Chrysostomos recently had liver cancer surgery in the US state of Florida.*

Old Greek Church in Asia Minor to Hold Service

On 9 February 2020,the eighteenth century basilica-style Cathedral of St.Charalambos will celebrate the eve of its patronal feast day with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presiding.Located in the city of Cesme,Turkey, which was once known as Tseme,Asia Minor,in the Holy Metropolis of Krini, the cathedral had been blown up by the Turkish army in 1821,but was restored and reopened in 2016.Patriarch Bartholomew has previously served two Divine Liturgies there.*
Cesme, which is visible from the Greek island of Chios, was once home to as many as 10,000 Greeks, and their descendants still regard it with affection. Many of them, including several from Chios, attended the previous services in their ancestral hometown. The most ancient name of the city was Erythres.*
The Metropolis of Krini was home to about 60,000 Orthodox Christians.Besides St.Charalambos, there were four other Greek churches in Tseme and 34 rustic chapels in its outskirts.*
The Turkish community of Cesme also holds its own cultural events in the restored cathedral.*
