NATO:Sweden Extends Enhanced Partnership - conscription reinstituted
In 2014 at the NATO Wales Summit,Sweden and four other NATO partners were granted enhanced status. They were offered a more flexible and individualised relationship with the Alliance, over and beyond other partnership formats. This took place in the context of Russia illegally annexing Crimea and intervening in Eastern Ukraine.
According to Sweden's Ambassador to NATO,Hakan Malmqvist, writing in The NATO Review magazine:
The developments in 2014 brought defence and security planning back to the top of the political agenda. The deteriorating security environment and the need for NATO to focus on collective defence and the defence of Europe, underlined our mutual interest of working even closer together. The need to view the Baltic Sea as one strategic area became a natural driving force for our strategic cooperation.*
At the NATO Warsaw Summit of 2016,NATO emphasised the need to develop regular political consultations, shared situational awareness and joint exercises with Finland and Sweden.*
Our common challenges are greater and more complex than in decades.Regional powers and non-state actors are testing their strength against neighbours, other states, and international institutions. The threats are manifold and more complex.*
This year (2017),the Swedish government decided to reactivate the national conscription system.Conscription for both men and women will start from the 1st of January 2018 and the plan is to enlist/enroll approximately 4,000 recruits the first year.*
In 2016,the government of Sweden adopted a "Memorandum of Understanding on Host Nation Support."This MoU with NATO is to ensure that Sweden,as a host nation, can provide effective support for military activities on Swedish territory in connection with exercises, crises or military operations in Sweden and in our vicinity.*
The positive assessment of our first years as an EOP has now resulted in an extension of this status for another 3 years.I am convinced that we can continue to develop our cooperation further. While based on mutual interests and shared values,we must take into account political and military restrictions distinguishing partner and Allied nations. We are eager to consult with the Allies and NATO officials on possible next steps and priorities.

Complex Air Exercise by NATO Nordic Partners,Allies Imminent
Arctic Challenge Exercise 2017 will soon be underway in Finland,Norway and Sweden. From 22 May to 2 June 2017,more than 100 aircraft and thousands of troops will stage the drills, which are held every two years. The core bases for the war games are Bodo,Norway;Lulea,Sweden;and Rovaniemi,Finland. This third iteration of the exercise is a project of the Nordic Defence Cooperation organisation (NORDEFCO).It aims to improve the capability of multinational forces to participate in combined air operations for the purpose of crisis management.ACE 17 will facilitate training for large-scale planning and implementation of air operations in an authentic operating environment, involving a wide range of aircraft and forces of modern air warfighting.*
Besides the three host nations, air forces from NATO Allies the Netherlands;Belgium;UK;Canada;France;Germany;and US will participate, along with Switzerland. They will send the following types of aircraft:multi-role fighters;transport and liaison;aerial refuelling tankers;EW aircraft;AWACS;transport and SAR helicopters, accompanied by ground troops and ground-based air defence units.*
Norway is the only country that is currently both a NATO ally and NORDEFCO member.*
For the first time,US Air Force Global Strike Command B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers will take part in the drills. They will be part of a single mission at the end of ACE 17 and will not land at the Nordic bases. As well, some of the exercise aircraft will be deployed from their home bases beyond the actual training area.It is also notable that the aircraft types and numbers are subject to change.*
The exercise points up the growing closeness of NATO and NORDEFCO.It also highlights the increasing significance of the Arctic.

Pinterest Looking To Grow User Base and Revenue
Photo curating and sharing platform Pinterest is hoping to expand its user base in Europe. The social media company is opening offices in the Netherlands,Spain,Italy and Sweden this year.
In another big move, the privately held firm is taking a big step in monetisation of the platform with the "buyable pins" concept. Now users will be able to buy depicted products directly from the site by clicking on small blue "Buy It" tabs on the pins,as the platform's photos are called.
We're very excited about products being brought directly into the Pinterest ecosystem, said Satish Kanwar of Shopify.Pinterest is our second largest referrer, but the first in value of purchases made.*
Pinterest users often use the site to shop for products or get ideas for projects, but to this point have had to go offsite to actually make a purchase. The company is five years old and valued at 11 billion dollars.Pinterest will not get a cut of each buyable pin transaction, but will offer vendors the option of paying for a promoted pin which is shown to users with a particular profile.Similarly,Google is adding a buy button to search results.
More than two million products will initially be offered on buyable pins by the likes of retailers such as Macy's,Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. You can pay with ApplePay or credit card.Buyable pins will launch on the Pinterest iOS app for US users this month, then be available on Android and desktop later this year.
Pinterest has strong appeal to those looking for new furniture and decorating ideas, fashion, wedding plans and baby products,as well as those interested in curating photos that reflect their interest in any number of topics, from art history to sports.
Successfully monetising this growing and distinctive platform will point it in the direction of becoming a public company.

Why Microsoft Wants Minecraft
Microsoft is seeking to buy electronic game maker Mojang for two billion dollars.Mojang, based in Stockholm,Sweden, makes the wildly popular Minecraft game.It is described as being a sandbox game,in which players create their own projects with the available material-in this case, virtual building blocks.*
Acquiring this online Lego-type diversion would snag a popular game they can couple with their Xbox gaming console franchise. It is a play for younger consumers and lends the firm the cool factor. The indie game studio Mojang has come up with an addictive product in Minecraft, and many others would like to list it among their assets.*
Minecraft is currently the second most popular console game and part of a more lucrative entertainment business than cinema or books. With no rules to follow,Minecraft is an adventure that is up to the players. They can build whatever they like 24/7.It is available in a PC/Mac version that has sold well over 16 million units so far;on Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3 as well.It may also be purchased in the Pocket Edition for iOS and Android devices.*
